Support the Kids & Families of Crescent Cove

We knew before Timmy was born that he would have Down syndrome and a heart defect. What we didn't know is that we would be starting a difficult journey that also included frequent hospitalizations, life-threatening respiratory issues, emergency surgeries, and lifelong medical concerns.

Timmy will be turning 13 in May, and while his health is now relatively stable, he still deals with ongoing respiratory, immune, and gastrointestinal issues. Because of his difficult start in life, he is more delayed than most children with Down syndrome and needs a high level of support. He needs help with most activities of daily living -- he is minimally verbal (although he communicates in other ways!), receives all his nutrition through a feeding tube, and needs help using the bathroom, bathing, and dressing. He gets colds and viruses often and has frequent appointments with doctors and physical, occupational, and speech therapists. As a parent, providing this high level of care day in and day out can be exhausting and stressful.

This is where Crescent Cove comes in! Timmy began visiting this amazing facility a few days at a time last year. Not only do they provide top-notch nursing care, but they also make each stay fun with activities tailored to each child's interests. Timmy loves the playground, music therapy, rides on the pontoon, and singing along with Disney movies with staff and volunteers. He is so loved there, and I can take a break knowing he is in the best hands possible.

Crescent Cove is the only facility of its kind in the Midwest. They offer respite care for children with complex medical issues as well as hospice services. They do all of this without asking families to pay out of pocket. Instead, they depend on funding from Medicaid, which is currently facing steep cuts, and corporate and personal donations.

I'm running the Twin Cities Ten Mile in October to raise funds for Crescent Cove, out of gratitude for what they do for Timmy and our family.
